What are some examples of actions that constitute domestic violence?
Domestic violence is a broad term that incorporates a number of actions. Domestic violence is typically defined as violence that occurs between two parties that have had an intimate relationship. This includes married couples, domestic partnerships, dating partners, individuals who live together, and individuals who have a child together. Domestic violence does not necessarily mean just physical abuse. Emotional, sexual or verbal abuses are equally valid forms of domestic violence. Typical forms of domestic violence include:
- Sexual assault
- Intentional or reckless physical abuse
- Physically hurting or trying to hurt someone, intentionally or recklessly
- Threats against a person or their family
- Destroying an individual’s personal property
- Violence against an individual’s children or family
- Habitual harassment
- Drugging an individual
What is a Domestic Violence Restraining Order?
A domestic violence restraining order is a court order that helps protect people from abuse or threats of abuse from someone they have a close relationship with. If you are a parent and your child is being abused, you can also file a restraining order on behalf of your child to protect your child (and you and other family members). If your child is 12 or older, he or she can file the restraining order on his or her own.
